About this resource

What diphtheria is, how it spreads, and how the free combined vaccine protects kids, teens and adults. It's never too late to catch up.

Diphtheria is a serious sickness of the throat or skin that can cause trouble breathing or swallowing, or sores that are slow to heal. It can be life-threatening. This animation explains how it spreads, through the air, spit, skin sores and shared towels, bandages or toothbrushes, and why vaccination is the best protection. The vaccine is a combined needle that also protects against tetanus and whooping cough. It's free. Kids need it, teens and adults need boosters, and it's never too late to catch up.
